If you turn up the compression dials on zstd, you can get down to 27MB - though instead of 2 seconds to compress it takes 52 seconds on my laptop. If you don't mind it being a little slower to access, and the difference is not massive, the ZStd appears to offer better compression. If you are interested in fast access to the data, LZ4 appears to still be the fastest answer. I finally read up on the documentation and did some searching around about LZ4 vs ZSTD compression since I read there isn't much decompression overhead for ZSTD. Aside from the initial transfer and compression of several TB probably taking a solid second, I'm pretty sure I can live with and work around slower writes for media going forward..

Aside from the initial transfer and compression of several TB probably taking a solid second, I'm pretty sure I can live with and work around slower writes for media going forward.. This time I have added two new compression algorithms from Facebook's zStandard (zstd) realtime compression algorithm which is said to way faster than gzip/zlib but with comparable compression ratios and Google's Brotli compression algorithm which has better compression ratios. I finally read up on the documentation and did some searching around about LZ4 vs ZSTD compression since I read there isn't much decompression overhead for ZSTD. I actually did a simple SquashFS benchmark myself a while back[1][2] (including Zstd vs plain zlib, which SquashFS calls "gzip") and came to the same conclusion as the article: Zstd turned out to compress somewhat faster, decompress more than twice as fast and achieved a higher data density. It would be interesting how much the better optimized .... Agreed that if you have the control (and potentially the time depending on the algorithm), type specific compression is the way to go. Having said that, zstd beats Snappy handily for text ^_^ On enwik8 (100MB of Wikipedia XML encoded articles, mostly just text), zstd gets you to ~36MB, Snappy gets you to ~58MB, while gzip will get you to 36MB..
